Decadent, delicious and simple to make! This 4-Ingredient dark chocolate whiskey mousse makes the perfect addition to any gathering! Fluffy and rich with a subtle bite of bourbon and vanilla, you’re not going to be able to stop eating this dessert!
If you’re here to make “Monica’s Mockoclate Mousse”, you’ve come to the right place! Except… small problem… Mockolate didn’t pass FDA certification. Something about laboratory rats… Anyways, it’s for the best. Because Mockolate tastes like pure evil. And for this delicious Mousse recipe, you’re gonna want the real deal!
Whiskey and Chocolate?
Does this even need an explanation? Bourbon and chocolate go together like Monica and Chandler. Something about rich, decadent chocolate combined with the bite of bourbon is just so right. And I’m not even much of a whiskey fan…
The sweet and bitter combo is nicely balanced with vanilla making it the perfect marriage of flavors!
Matt (my husband) is not much of a sweets fan, but I 100% am. So, in an effort to encourage him to eat sweets with me, I seek out opportunities to make my favorite desserts appeal to him! And Matt loves whiskey… so when I tell him something is “whiskey infused”, I have his attention!
4-Ingredient Dark Chocolate Whiskey Mousse
Per usual, I did my best to make this recipe as simple as possible! If there’s a shortcut I can take without compromising flavor, I take it! I may have taken a short cut with this recipe, but you’d never guess it!
Here are the four simple ingredients you’ll need in order to make this decadent dessert (find my detailed recipe at the end of this post):
- heavy whipping cream
- dark chocolate chips
- vanilla extract
- bourbon whiskey
10 Minutes to Prepare the Whiskey Mousse
Another thing I wanted to cut back – prep time! Here’s how you prepare this delicious dark chocolate whiskey mousse in 10 minutes or less!
- Pour the heavy whipping cream into a bowl and beat for a few minutes with an electric mixer. Whip until stiff (nearly clumpy) peaks form.
- Melt chocolate chips over low heat on the stove, stirring constantly. Remove from heat before the chips melt completely (this should only take a minute or two). You want to allow the chips to finish melting away from the stove to avoid overcooking.
- Stir chocolate chips until melted and smooth, and then stir in whiskey and vanilla. Make sure the chocolate does not cool before adding these ingredients or they will not combine well!
- Fold chocolate into the whipping cream. You can do this by hand or you can use an electric mixer on low to help you fully incorporate the chocolate.
- Pop in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve (allow it to chill for at least 10 minutes in the fridge)!
Mousse-Making Tips and Mistakes to Avoid
The shortcut I use in my recipe makes this mousse pretty foolproof to make! That being said, there are a few classic mistakes one can make that can cause the dish to flop. Here are some tips and caution items to avoid!
- Make sure you whip the heavy whipping cream long enough! If you stop too soon, your mousse will lose it’s form and become runny by the time you’re ready to serve it. To make sure you avoid under-whipping your cream, do so until obvious clumps can be seen. It actually looks alarming, like you messed something up. But this is how you want it to look! Your peaks (cream) should be pretty stiff and fluffy! (see the video under the recipe as a reference)
- Do not over cook the chocolate on the burner (or microwave)! This is why I encourage you to take the chocolate off the stove before the chips have fully melted. It may be a pain to stir the chips as they finish melting, but it is totally worth it to avoid overheating the precious chocolate!
- Once you stir in your whiskey and vanilla, immediately pour and fold the chocolate into the whipped cream! The whiskey and vanilla are cooler than the temperature of your melted chocolate and will quickly cool it off, making it stiff and difficult to stir. Stir these ingredients in quickly and then pour it right away!
- Make sure to allow it to set in the fridge! Prior to chilling, the mousse is fluffy and tasty, but not quite as dense as mousse should be. Chilling the mousse in the fridge will make it the perfect custard-esque consistency! 10 minutes should be enough, but the more time you have the better!
It’s All in the Ingredients
Keep in mind, a recipe is only as good as the ingredients it’s made of! That is especially true for a no-bake 4-ingredient treat like this. If you use cheap, poor quality whiskey, vanilla, or chocolate chips, you will not achieve optimal results.
This is the time to pull out the top shelf whiskey (you aren’t using much) and to snag some Ghirardelli chocolate chips! Also, avoid using imitation vanilla – in a recipe like this you can really notice the difference!
Can I modify the Whiskey Content in this Dark Chocolate Whiskey Mousse?
Absolutely, you can! If you want the rich, bold flavor and subtle bite of whiskey without the buzz or bitterness, use only a teaspoon (as the recipe calls for). But if you’re making these for a party and want them to be a little more “fun”, you can crank up the alcohol content!
Feel free to play around with the alcohol content yourself as you taste-test the chocolate, and add more to your preference! Remember that since this recipe is a “no-bake” recipe, none of this alcohol will “cook out” – so what you put in is what you’ll get in the final product!
Maybe you’re making these for a family friendly gathering. If that’s the case and if you’d rather omit this ingredient altogether, go for it! The teaspoon of whiskey that the recipe calls for is not enough to make this recipe “unsafe”, but sometimes it’s an unnecessary addition. The call is yours!
Serving the Dark Chocolate Whiskey Mousse
This is my favorite part! There are a lot of fun and unique ways to serve traditional mousse, but the serve ware for this variety was an obvious choice!
Whiskey glasses make the perfect dark chocolate whiskey mousse serving bowls! In fact, there really is no other acceptable way to serve them.
Grab your whiskey glasses, spoon a few dollops into the glass, and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings!

Alright, here’s the dark chocolate whiskey mousse recipe you came for!
Dark Chocolate Whiskey Mousse
Dark Chocolate Whiskey Mousse
Equipment
- electric mixer
Ingredients
- 2 C heavy whipping cream
- 2 C dark chocolate chips (recommend Ghirardelli)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp bourbon whiskey * can add more to preference
Instructions
- in a mixing bowl, whip the heavy whipping cream with an electric hand mixer (or any electric mixer) on high until stiff peaks form. The whipping cream is done when the cream is stiff and there are noticeable "clumps". This should only take a couple minutes.
- Melt chocolate chips (halfway) in a small saucepan on the stove over low heat, stirring constantly to avoid overcooking. Remove from heat before the chocolate chips have melted completely.
- Away from heat, stir the chocolate until entirely melted and smooth, then add whiskey and vanilla. (If you opt to add more whiskey, do so 1 tsp at a time and stir between). Quickly stir to incorporate and pour in to the whipped cream while it's still melty. Fold chocolate into the whipping cream with a spoon/spatula (or use an electric mixer on low) until fully incorporated.
- Chill in the fridge for at least ten minutes to allow it to become dense and "custard-like". Once chilled, spoon into a whiskey or shot glasses. I recommend to enjoy once it returns to nearly room temperature. Then, Garnish with whipped cream and chocolate shavings!
